    Hi. Okay, I am trying this out... I missed the fact that you had to sign in first which is probably dopey, but it wasn't really clear. First I started looking around at topics and then realized that you had to sign in first. Honestly, just now, I would rather see a zillion emails on my computer, allowing me to delete what I want instead of being in this little box. I feel that a person may miss a lot by having it this way. I could honestly see a lot of people quitting. I belong to another group and I never go into it because it's a pain... I like the emails to come to me.

    Hi, If you look to the upper left hand corner, you can subscribe to the topic you are interested in. You can subscribe to everything or just one thing. When you get a message that something has been posted to your area that you subscribed, you just click on the link and it takes you there.
  2.
    I subscribed to everything. I just think I like the ideal of email better... the message is right there and you can respond... or not. Maybe it's just me. How may other people have signed up for this and are trying it out?

    I feel the same way about the email having the actual message in it. Perhaps there is another program or there will be an upgrade to this one that will have that option. For A LOT of people on the original lists, this could be actually a better method for them. I say this because there is about 180 people on the open list and maybe the same on the news list. I am guessing that MOST of these folks either do not read there messages or wait until a bunch pile up. If that is the case, they can just go to this new forum, it is sorted by subject and they can read a discussion when they want, in total context instead of piece meal. Dunno.

    Right now Wednesday at 8 AM there is about 20 pioneers on this new system.
  3.
    I am also trying this out. I don't see a problem so far. This is for the Camden open/news events. As everyone knows, the Camden open site has been very very quiet recently. I don't have a problem looking for the things that involve me and ignoring the ones that don't.
    Signing up was easy.

    Hi all,

    I also signed up and I am trying this for the first time. I am assuming that when comments are here to be read, I will get an email telling me that there is activity on this site. If there is no activity, then I will not hear anything, is this correct?

    Yes, sort of. You will not hear anything about anything unless you subscribe to the Forum or Category. If you are logged on and reading this message, look in the left column of this window under Notification, you will see your option to subscribe.

    To everyone:

    Look at the top of the page. You will see Discussions, Categories, Search, Settings and Account. Click on anyone of them and then look at the left corner, you will see options to change. Try them out for each of the Discussions, Categories, Search, Settings and Account.

    You can find out who is subscribed by going to Search and filling in the radial button for Users and clicking on Search. Everyone comes up. Once you do that you may want to go to "Account" and then put in the information you want the members to see about you. Don't put anything in that you do not want people to know! At the bottom of Personal Information put in "Class of" under Label and 19xx under Value.

    Try out as much as you can so we can work the bugs out and figure out what the capabilities of the system are.

    should we delete our "camden-open" address and quit sending messages there?

    and am i correct in understanding that messages will no longer be sent to our email address...we will need to check here for messages?

    When some of the kinks get worked out on this site, I will send out a message to camden-open and camden-news that they are closing. In the interim, you are welcome continue to use it. In fact, since we are a long way from getting everyone or even most over here, it would be a good idea to continue to write to camden-open so everyone is getting the messages.

    If you subscribe to the Forum or to the Category (ies) then you will get a message when someone posts something there. Please don't get confused about your membership (subscription). This does not subscribe you to the Forum or Catagories. You have to do that yourself in the left hand column. You will NOT be harassed by lots of messages saying someone has posted something. You will get one and until you check it and any additional messages, you will not get another message. So with this feature, I think camden-open and camden-news can co-habitate on the same service without lots of griping. If you do not subscribe to the Forum or Category, you will get no messages.
  5.
    So does this mean that we still will have CamdenChatter... or no?
    • CommentAuthorAdmin
    • CommentTimeJun 6th 2007

    Of course. This has absolutely nothing to do with CamdenChatter. It is camden-open and camden-news that are on the server I operate. Majordomo is the software I cannot support any longer. I am sorry that there are people thinking that this has something to do with CamdenChatter.
  6.
    Okie dokie artichoke... I thought this was taking the place of Camden Chatter and have since learned that it isn't so this is okay by me.

    Hi all,

    Finally found time to register and check this out. Great site, Richard!

  8.
    Looks like the photos I uploaded don't show up. I gave URLs for both a photo of Anne and me next to Tiger (our favorite club airplane); and an icon-size one of me in front of Rusty (the club plane we fly the most). Let me know if there's something I need to do in order for the photos to show up.

  9.
    Just curious whether URLs can be inserted directly into messages, so here's a test using two different methods for the same Tiger photo:
    http://members.impulse.net/~johnwiley/photo/IMG_0623--.jpg

    <a href="http://members.impulse.net/~johnwiley/photo/IMG_0623--.jpg">link to same photo</a>

    OK, so they're not "clickable" but you could highlight the first one, then copy and paste it into your browser's Location or GoTo box. Having fun yet? I am. :)

    Hi John,

    Thanks for trying out the icon and picture feature. Both pictures on your icon and on your user file are there, but they are not centered. I will ask Bob about it. Also the like works if I cut and paste it, but clicking on it does not work. Dunno why.

    Hello Admin Guys--

    OK. I'm in. Not sure what I'm in but my boots aren't turning brown and that's a good sign. I found what might be a an oversight in the Cambrian Elementary forum and left a message there for you Admin types: "Shouldn't this be described as: This is a place to remember the place and events concerning Cambrian ELEMENTARY or to update the Forum on new changes, not Cambrian Park?" The Cambrian Park Forum appears OK. I did the Cindy 65 thing and checked ALL the boxes. I want the 'test 123' pic for my personal Icon!!!! I love it. If Admin will let me know that when ya'all respond to the Qs below.

    Qs:
    1-So the BIG change is that individual e-mails will not show up in my sbcglobal (Yahoo!) account as happens now, but will receive a notice that informs me message(s) posted to a subscribed Forum.

    2-Now if I don't log in to view that forum for a week, and during that time 20 additional posts have been made, I will NOT receive another posting advisory. Is that how it goes?

    3-I noticed that emphasis--underline, bold, color, italics, size--are not workable, at least w/my Safari 2.0.4 (latest v.), and haven't tried my Firefox (latest v.) yet. Is that one of the Settings/Options Admin does? And are those Settings/Options what ya'all work with to make any changes that are system-wide, and not for users to try and format our particular posting window, like Yahoo! has?

    4-OK, this format is 'HTML' format, radial button checked; I saw bobb's post, "all of a sudden HTML is working" and it appers that he was able to do pretty much what he wanted with that part of his post, but nothing happening here--I might have missed reading something somewhere that I need to do to get it working.

    5-OK, format is back to 'Text'. One of the ways of responding to some posts that have a few different statements therein is the ability to insert comments in a suitable spots in the post to respond to just that part of the post, but that is functional when it hits my sbcglobal (Yahoo!) account; I usually kill the garbage that the Spam missed and download the messages to my HD and do my stuff off-line. I think I saw that Q somewhere in this forum that leads me to believe we CANNOT download copies of the posts from the server?

    6-So I have seen some names, like yours, Rich, that are responding to some of these Qs that tells me 3 - 4 of ya are involved in getting this done. Those names would be helpful, at least to me, just to know with whom I am talking; no spell-check, right? Not really a necessity IMHO, as we seem to figure out what each other are attempting to say, or use our own in a draft window of our own e-mail client, then copy and paste.

    7-To defeat the situation in my Q-5--duhhhh--one could copy the post and do whatever and paste it in the 'comments' window if downloading is not an option with Vanilla; haven't tried to insert/paste into an existing post in the forum--next time.

    Well, that's 'nuff for now, and can probably answer a couple of Qs by attempting a few things that, as always, come to mind AFTER the Qs are posted, but answers from your end would be helpful for all as ya'all most likely know a few work-arounds for some things that work in a couple of areas but we haven't hit that wall and asked the Q yet; perhaps a Forum that doesn't have all the Q's posted, but contains YOUR answers/explanations to significant Qs posted. I know it can tend to become unwieldly, but if Admin only post to that forum, you will have created a "How to" forum that answers the FAQ without posting Qs, just "how to" use HTML, for example, and answers we users run across when attempting something could be put there by Admin and duplications are minimized. Hey! We could then sell 'use' to Vanilla for the Foundation. Yeah, I know, but the best I got today for humor--Giants spanked 6-0 by A's...

    Change is Challenge, not always fun, but interesting and enlightening,

    djc '61 (One more Q, I did not see option for 'signature')

    ps - I really, really, really would appreciate the picture from 'test 123' for my personal Icon, just let me know how I can manage it and I'll move on it...

    djc '61: to set the picture as your icon - do the following:
    right-click on the picture and select properties to see the location/name of file (http://www.camdenhigh.com/pics/baboon.jpg)
    click on the Account tab under the 'Welcome to Camden High School Forum'
    click on 'Personal Information' under Account Options on the left side
    look for the icon input area and add the location of the picture you want to use (i.e. http://www.camdenhigh.com/pics/baboon.jpg)
    click on the save button and the bottom of the form

    Q4 - if you want to use html code, then you must use html formatting and use the radio button 'html'. Each html command begins with a '<' and ends with a '>'.
    for example try this:
    <html>
    <body>
    <h1>
    This is a test!
    </h1>
    </body>
    </html>

    1-So the BIG change is that individual e-mails will not show up in my sbcglobal (Yahoo!) account as happens now, but will receive a notice that informs me message(s) posted to a subscribed Forum.

    A1->correct....

    2-Now if I don't log in to view that forum for a week, and during that time 20 additional posts have been made, I will NOT receive another posting advisory. Is that how it goes?

    A2->I believe you'll receive an e-mail notification for each of the 20 posts made. You only need to click on one of them to see all of the comments

    3-I noticed that emphasis--underline, bold, color, italics, size--are not workable, at least w/my Safari 2.0.4 (latest v.), and haven't tried my Firefox (latest v.) yet. A4-> It works if you use the formatting explained in the previous post

A5-> I copied and pasted your questions here with no problem...

Not really a necessity IMHO, as we seem to figure out what each other are attempting to say, or use our own in a draft window of our own e-mail client, then copy and paste.

    A6-> bobb = Bob Beaulieu - a friend of Richard Friberg

    7-To defeat the situation in my Q-5--duhhhh--one could copy the post and do whatever and paste it in the 'comments' window if downloading is not an option with Vanilla; haven't tried to insert/paste into an existing post in the forum--next time.

    A7-> that's what I did.

    Hi,

    I corrected the Cambrian Elementary by editing it. Do you want me to remove your comment so it doesn't look like you were correcting something that is okay? I can change it to say something more meaningful if you want.

    Okay, so this is how I understand it. Bob walked me through somethings last night. He is very patient. If you want your text to be more than just text, you have to know HTML. If you know how to write in html, then you can put in the html and then click on on the Html button at the bottom of the comments box where it says "Format comments as o text o Html". That will change the html code to the fancy stuff you coded. It shows in Safari if you coded it and clicked on the Html button. You just need to know how to code html.

    For the Icon and Pictures, you have to reduce the size to the size outlined in the Account section in the Personal settings section. The pics are quite small (280 pixels wide by 200 pixels high) and for the Icon the pictures have to be (80 X 80 Pixels). So you will have to seriously downsize your picture on a web page and then put the URL in for that downsized picture. A lot of steps.

    Vanilla is a free community coded application. They create extentions to add or change things with the program. If and when they get an extension to pass the actual message along to a subscribed list, we will try it out. Also if we can find a program that is compatible with the GoDaddy server and is better than Vanilla we will try that out too. I do not know what I am talking about but someone said that the program we use now (majordomo) is Peral and we need programs in PHP. I do not know if what I just said is correct or meaningful to people that really know how this works. :-)

    As far as the emails, you will only get one email from the system for the category or discussion you subscribe to no matter how many new posts there are. You will NOT get another email for that discussion or category until you go to the site and review the discussion. You will not be flooded with emails from the system. The danger is, you get a notice that something has been updated and you put it away and forget about it. You are not going to get any more reminders until you remember to go to the vanilla site and log on and go to that forum/category.

    Hopefully Bob's response and this one will add up to answering all your questions. If it doesn't, don't worry ask again and I will try to do better.

    Richard and Bob,

    Thanks for your quick replies and they definitely clarify some things for me; I'm late getting back to ya however.

    Your Q-I corrected the Cambrian Elementary by editing it. Do you want me to remove your comment so it doesn't look like you were correcting something that is okay? I can change it to say something more meaningful if you want.

    My A-Yeah, absolutely, you could insert on top/at beginning of it that "DJC '61's notice below, re: Cambrian Grammer has been fixed (Date/Time, or what suits the occasion) and maybe in a color font.

    My tests below attempting to paste enhanced fonts from a couple of well known pieces of S/W. Been on the WWW since '93 and have NOT attempted to learn HTML, and my first attempts at doing a site began a few weeks ago; thus far I have purchased and registered several domain names and archived a half-dozen blog samples from browsing to get a sense of what options are available, and there are a TON, now that's a problem for me. When I write a paper for school/submission, my process is to rough draft in my head and my first-pass is rather good, not acceptable, but usually only a few corrections, and adding all the references/bibliography. But CAN'T do that with a site, just gotta get some basic things to create a 'vanilla' but functional page by getting in there and DOING it, THEN expand--I'm gettin' there...

    Tests
    This is a test for color from my Mac 'Text Edit' s/w and 'Text Edit' should be in red, but not luck...

    This is a test for color/italics from my Mac MS Word 4 Mac 2004; ‘MS Word 4 Mac 2004’ should be red and in italics, but not luck here either...

    From my Q-3 - ...the Settings/Options page (not our personal settings) are what ya'all work with to make any changes that are system-wide, and not for users to try and format our particular posting window, like Yahoo! has, correct? Are they p/w protected for Admin, I don't want to mess w/them, but some info will help me decide stuff for my site.

    This should have been Q-8 from the final paragraph in my earlier post re: adding forum(s):

    "...ya'all most likely know a few work-arounds for some things that work in a couple of areas but we users haven't hit that wall and asked the Q yet; perhaps a Forum that doesn't have all the Q's posted, but contains YOUR answers/explanations to significant Qs posted, maybe w/a name/date reference to the original Q. I know it can tend to become unwieldly, but if Admin only post to that forum, you will have created a "How to" forum that answers the FAQ without posting Qs, just "how to" use the HTML option, Must Know HTML, for example, and answers we users run across when attempting something could be put there by Admin and duplications are minimized. I suggest this because I DID see a couple of Q & As from others AFTER I posted mine, and my laziness wastes time, sorry! Hey! We could then sell 'use' of it to Vanilla for $$$ for the Foundation. :-))

    Hello Admin--

    Just went to the Y! Groups page and see that all the individual pages are at camdenhigh.com with links. I have absolutely no idea how long that has been that way, I just knew there were four separate domains and getting around was like an MC Escher drawing--go anywhere from anywhere from inside anything to inside/outside anything, and do so without moving!!

    I am just checking it out as Classmates is a pain-in-the-ass; spoke w/Jo Ann, Super of Customer Care, in an attempt to do a set-up for a member-wide announcement that goes to each and every member. But at the present there is nos way to get it done. I did all the necessary things about the school having closed, contact/confirmations are difficult if not impossible, teachers and students pass away and we don't want to put that out as an Announcement to the world, I gave her everything, including tears, visits to Classmates become minimal and prohibiting e-mail/URLs in announcements is unduly inhibiting to members, promises, threats, I DO know where she works--did some beta testing when I was early back to school--but she said her boss is more scary than I with the pen that signs her check so threats are dead; also complained that being the contact for one's grad year, is overly limiting as there is no contact allowed with the 4 years that would comprise a standard grad class, she moved a little but not an earth-shaking move. BUT, they are going to consider/discuss potential options to accommodate schools that are in similar situations.

    Wish I had better news there. Now Reunions is another matter. I can click on all the members' names to make them a member of my group and send a mass mail announcement (even mentioned that to Jo Ann) so we'll see what's up.
